Anyone know of a good, easy way to boost your dogs immune system?
As of tomorrow my dog will be 2 years old. She has been diognosed with demodectic mange since she was a year. I have used ivermec, cod liver oil and antibiotics for infection. Nothing works! After months of treatment with ivermec her hair starts to grow back in, then the weather changes and its back again. I have gone to several vets and can’t find an answer. I don’t want to do it but I am ready to put her down. People are scared of her because of how she looks. It doesnt seem to be any kind of life the way she is. Does anyone have any advice? Anything I could attempt to give her some quality of life. I dont want this dog to have a life of suffering and then be put down.
she has been on all the good brands, nutromax, natural chioce, I’ve even fed her chicken and rice that Ive cooked. It doesnt seem to change things
Have you brought her to a specialist (dermatologist)?? THAT should be your next step. Simply ask your practicing veterinarian for a referral to the specialist.

Is it safe for my dog to get vaccinated?
My dog was diagnosed about Oct 2008 with having demodectic mange. He is on a treatment plan of antibiotics and dips. He is also taking an ear infection ointment. He has 3 dips left before he is finished with his treatment plan of dips.
The local community is offering free vaccinations this week for dogs and cats. Is it safe to take my dog to get his vaccinations or should I wait until he finishes his last two dips one month from now (he gets dipped tomorrow.)
I dip my dog at home unfortunately and the next appointment isn’t until after the vaccination clinic.
Ask your vet.

Golden Retriever has mange?
I own a 10 year old male Golden and he was treated for Demodectic mange last year. The vet said it was hereditary and that he could have gotten it from his mother and it was not sarcoptic mange. Anyway he was shaved and went through a series of dips. That didn’t help. Then the vet ran more test and say that he has a thyroid problem. He has been on thyroid medicine now for about 2 months and he has had one dose of Promeris flea treatment (he said it was good for loss of hair) Anyway, it hasn’t grown back, in fact he looks worse. Is there anyone out there that has had a Golden Retriever with this problem. I can go back to the vet but any information you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks
I found this on; http://www.downlandvets.co.uk/Pages/Clinical/Pages/Mange.html
The localised form is usually treated with topical medication and clears easily. The generalised form may require more intensive treatment.
Shampooing with a follicular flusher to open the hair follicles (roots). An example of these shampoos is Etiderm or Paxcutol. The dog is thoroughly dried afterwards.
Wash with an anti-Demodex shampoo. We prefer Aludex solution. It is important that the solution is diluted according to instructions on the bottle and scrubbed into all of the skin. It is essential for you to wear gloves while applying the solution. The wash contains the insecticide Amitraz. The product can have side effects on the dog and you if not used properly. Most dogs will appear sleepy for a few hours after the bath.
These two treatments are repeated every 5-7 days until the mites are eliminated. This can take anywhere from weeks to several months. We will keep a regular check on you and your dog and advise you when to stop. After the treatment it will be necessary to examine your dog for the presence of live mites or eggs.
Vitamin E can be taken as tablets or capsules and helps stimulate the immune system.
Antibiotics. For dogs with generalised demodectic mange, secondary skin infections may represent a complicating factor requiring antibiotic therapy. Dogs with skin infections have very red, inflamed itchy skin. This is the source of the term “red mange”.
